                                 5 Minutes Out

Trustees and Session at Westminster are co-sponsoring a campaign to provide a simple reminder of how a small change in habit can help change their carbon footprint.  The small sticker that gets applied to any light switch cover plate will be visible any time that we turn a light on and will remain as a reminder to turn them off when we leave the room.  They are most appropriate for rooms such as bedrooms, bathrooms and closets but other rooms like kitchens, garages and basements are potential wastes of energy if the lights are left on.

Mythbusters, a popular television series, has demonstrated that although there is a temporary surge of electricity used as one turns on the lights, the energy saved by turning them off offsets that surge in less than 2 minutes.  This urban myth of leaving them on to save the cost of the surge has been busted.

Aside from public spaces such as hallways and larger rooms, WPC is launching a campaign to turn lights off when leaving any room for 5 minutes or more within the church.  We are also making them available at no cost to anyone who wishes to use them in their home.

By affixing a sticker to the switchplate above or below the toggle, you are reminding everyone including yourself of how you are doing your part to reduce our electric consumption and, therefore, our carbon footprint. The initial order of 5000 white stickers with black printing and a laminated coating has been printed by Greenbush Tape and Label, a local company.  They are packaged in strips of eight along with a simple explanation of their use.

By accepting them, you will be part of a larger effort to practice the first of the 3 R’s and reduce as we recycle and re-use.
