Early
Accomplishments: Marjorie (Marge) Atwood Page graduated from Lowell, MA
High School in 1923 and from Keene Normal School in 1926. She was the first of
ten brothers and sisters to attend college and received a degree from
University of New Hampshire in Education in 1930. Following her example, four
younger siblings also received college degrees
Family:
In 1931 Marge married Harry 0. Page, who was Commissioner of Public
Welfare in New Hampshire and a Commissioner in Maine before the family moved
to Albany. She considers herself and Harry 0. married for 67 years. Harry 0.
died at age 78. They have three children, ten grandchildren and eight great
grandchildren. The children graduated from college with masters and Ph.D.
degrees in education, social welfare and speech.
Career:
Marge taught Junior and Senior High School for three years. She then
became a full-time homemaker and volunteer. In later years, she traveled
with her husband who was President of the American Public Welfare Association.
She was Secretary to the Community Research Associates, (CRA), which included
top Social Welfare staff throughout the United States. Harry 0. had retired as
a NYS Deputy Public Welfare Commissioner to work for Community Research
Associates.
Volunteer
Activities/Middle Years: Marge was a member of Alpha Xi Delta
(philanthropic sorority), a home room mother, Girl Scout leader, Red Cross and
Community Chest volunteer. She typed her son's Ph.D. dissertation (a major job
at that time) and his brother's master's thesis.
Volunteer
Activities/Senior Years: Marge was active in the Westminster Presbyterian
Church Service Guild (sewing for Albany Medical Center Hospital), FOCUS Food
Pantry, Book Club, and shut-in visitor (helper for the Pastor). She has
been a Westminster member since 1951.
Other:
Marge has a delightful sense of humor, is an excellent speaker, very
interested in reading, and concerned and caring (in a teacher sort of way).
