Early
Accomplishments: Margaret (Peg) Holsapple Edgerton was the Galway High
School Class Valedictorian in 1922. She graduated from Oneonta State Teachers
College with a bachelor's degree in 1928 and was the first member of her family
to receive a bachelor's degree. She did extensive additional course work in
elementary education at State University of New York at Albany, College of St.
Rose, and Russell Sage -- often seeking guidance from the State Education
Department on courses which might be particularly useful.
Family
: Peg has two children, Ronald and Norma, and two grandsons. She was married
to Stuart Edgerton from 1933 until his death in 1962. Peg has only one sibling -
a younger sister (Agnes) who retired as an elementary school principal in Chevy
Chase. Peg flew to Nevada to visit her sister in August, 1998.
Career:
Taught at the elementary school level in Oneonta, Long Island, Amsterdam and
Albany. She was a teacher at School 10 on Central Avenue in Albany from 1929
until 1957 when she became a supervisor for the Albany City Schools. In 1965 she
was instrumental in the introduction of "Project Head Start" in
Albany. For the last seven years of her career she was the Director of
Elementary Education (pre-K - 6) in Albany. She retired in 1977 - after more
than 50 years as an educator. She still maintains contact with former Albany
students, including some who are now more than 60 years old.
Volunteer
Activities/Middle Years: Active as a Red Cross volunteer, she was the
recipient of a twenty year pin in 1998 and the Second Career Award. She is an
active member of Delta Kappa Gamma (international education society). She has
been a Westminster member since 1938 (when she transferred her membership from
the Galway Presbyterian Church founded by her grandfather) and has served
Westminster Presbyterian Church as a Deacon and an Elder.
Volunteer
Activities/Senior Years: Peg is a care- giver extraordinaire involving
a number of personal friends, former business associates and family members. She
continues to be an active volunteer with the American Red Cross. At 92, she
still maintains her own home and is driving.
Other:
Peg has a zest for life; is always upbeat, cheerful, witty and thoughtful of
others. She is an active member of a church prayer/study group evidencing her
continued interest in learning.
