Vigil for Racial Justice
Tuesdays: 12 noon - 1:00 pm (weather permitting)
Westminster is initiating a public Vigil for Racial Justice to be held Tuesdays, 12 noon – 1:00 pm on State Street in front of the church. We will meet initially on 4 Tuesdays: September 22 and 29; October 6 and 13.
You are invited to join us and pray; hold signs; and witness the need for racial justice in our city, our country, and our world.
A large sign will read VIGIL FOR RACIAL JUSTICE. A leader will start each vigil with prayer. The remainder of the time, participants will stand with signs to pray for justice. Bring a sign along with wording of your choice if you are able. Basically a silent vigil, each person is asked to think carefully about “Why am I doing this,” so if asked by a passerby they can answer.
If you are able to join us (1 hour or 1/2 hour shift), please click here to respond or email the church office at: office@wpcalbany.org Leave your name, date(s) you will attend, return phone number and email address.

Beyond Food Drives
State Street Forum on Faith and Public Life
Wednesday, May 19
12 noon - 1:00 pm
We have seen a sharp increase in "drive-thru" food pantries and emergency food collections during the past year. This way of receiving food has been helpful for people who are not comfortable going to supermarkets and for those who have become unemployed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, people are getting vaccinated and COVID rates are declining in most areas. However, there is little public discussion to promote long-term food security in the US. Should our expanded level of emergency food aid become a permanent part of our social support system? Or are there policies and systems that would allow food drives to go out of business?
Featuring:
-
Mark Emmanation, longtime labor and community activist, board member of the Hunger Action Network of NY State and the Oakwood Community Center Food Pantry
-
Fred Boehrer, Executive Director of FOCUS Churches of Albany
Co-sponsored by the New York State Council of Churches and the Westminster Presbyterian Church

In Search of Civility
Tuesdays: May 4 through May 18
A class led by Rev. Paul Randall, HR
7:00 pm
What has happened to civility in public life? Civil discourse in the church and politics used to be the norm in America. But in the last twenty years it seems that society and its leaders suffer from an appalling lack of it. When everyone is shouting at one another it becomes difficult to imagine a different way of thinking about public debate. In this class we will explore some alternatives through four virtues of civility outlined in the study “Civility: American Politics and Christian Responses” by James Calvin Davis.
Please join us for three Zoom discussions Tuesdays at 7:00 pm on May 4, 11, and 18. To register and receive the three handouts please contact Paul or the church office by May 3.

WPC Church School Food Drive
Saturday, May 22, 2021
3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
WPC parking lot (drive-thru)
Most of our church school lessons this year have been about being kind to our neighbors. Many neighbors are in especial economic difficulty in the pandemic. The drive-thru Food Drive is our way of showing kindness to our neighbors and guests at the FOCUS food pantry. The purpose is to help stock the pantry.
Non-perishable donation items - for example:
-
Canned items: vegetables (no corn), fruits, and soups (NO tomato or vegetarian, chicken varieties good)
-
Spaghetti sauce in jars
-
Packaged goods: pasta, rice (1 lb bags), cereal, mac & cheese, and shelf or canned milk
-
Personal care items: body wash, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo/conditioner
When people arrive to donate, they should pull up into the parking lot, pop open their trunks and the children and youth will pick up the donations and shut the trunks. Helpers will bag or box items. All helpers will wear masks and we ask that donors do as well.
This is a wonderful opportunity to support our children and youth in helping our neighbors
Contact John Bossung or Belinda Quaye with any questions.

Racial Justice Conversation
Sunday, March 21
3:00 pm
Westminster is committed to work for racial justice right where we live in the communities of Albany County. To this end, members and friends take part in a weekly Vigil for Racial Justice, Tuesdays at noon in front of the church on State Street. The Vigil continues and all are welcome.
New York State has mandated that every community form a study group to consider ways to improve relations between minorities and the police. Draft reports are now being circulated and comments submitted. Is there a place for Westminster in this process? To this end, we are hosting a Zoom conversation, Sunday afternoon, March 21 at 3:00 to discuss how we might participate in this process where we live, both in Albany and in the suburbs.

Spiritual Practices for Emotional Resilience
Discussion Group - Wednesday
Begins Wednesday, November 18th, 7:30 pm
Continues December 2nd, 16th and 30th
As the days get shorter, many of us feel the emotional drag that comes from the loss of daylight. The stress of the pandemic and the election and isolation from people we love can be emotionally wearing as well. The Gospels assure us that God is very present to us in times of struggle, but how can we take these words of assurance to heart?
Join Pastor Heather and Emily Hart (a psychologist) as we combine Biblical wisdom with psychological resources to learn how to bridge our emotional and spiritual lives. We will cover a variety of simple practices that will help us live into this season with a measure of inner peace.

Blue Christmas with FOCUS Churches
Sunday, December 20, 2020
6:00 pm
We have experienced unprecedented loss this year. Family and friends have succumbed to death in the pandemic. Thousands have lost economic security; some have lost businesses built over a lifetime. Most of us have lost beloved rhythms of life that enriched us with variety in our activities and with the presence of others. We can also name many losses related to hatred and violence.
We belong to one another. Bearing one another’s burdens, and sharing grief is one expression of that. In Blue Christmas Worship, we recognize and name and honor our very real sorrows, even as we affirm the hope of our faith. FOCUS Executive Director Fred Boehrer and representatives from each of our churches will lead scripture, prayer, music and candle-lighting. as we recognize and name and honor our very real sorrows.
Bring a candle and a match to your worship space for a time of sharing the light together.
Zoom Details are available in your WPC weekly email. If you have any questions, please call the church office.

Westminster Organ Carols Online
Thursday, December 17
Details coming soon
Unfortunately, the current COVID-19 situation has caused Westminster Church to cancel our live, in-person Christmas Vespers service called A CAROL NATIVITY, which was scheduled to be presented on the evening of December 17. However, in its place, Al Fedak, our church's Minister of Music and Arts, has recorded a 35-minute program of Christmas music for the congregation to enjoy online.
Details are coming soon.
The program consists of twelve familiar Christmas carols arranged for organ by Al Fedak himself. The pieces are drawn from three of his published organ collections: AN ADVENT/CHRISTMAS SUITE (1991), A COLLECTION OF HYMNS (1996), and A RING OF CAROLS (2017), all composed during Al's tenure at Westminster. Also, the broadcast will include the first performance of Al's newest work for harpsichord. Titled "Carol, with Riffs," the work was commissioned by organist/harpsichordist Scott Hyslop for St. Lorenz Lutheran Church in Frankenmuth, Michigan. Inspired by the music of Mannheim Steamroller, the piece is a freewheeling setting of the French carol, "Angels We Have Heard on High." The entire program was recorded by Al at home, on his harpsichord and three-manual house organ. All are encouraged to tune in, experience this joyful celebration of holiday music, and share the link with friends and family throughout the season.
