Schuyler Inn Winter Give-Away

Join us in supporting families in need this season

WHAT IS THE SCHUYLER INN?

Schuyler Inn is a shelter in Menands that provides housing for families that have been displaced due to eviction or to poor management by a landlord. Built in the 1960’s with small rooms of that vintage, the living situation is tight with no kitchen facilities where everyone lives in one room. Larger families are provided with two rooms. Meals are served through the facility’s kitchen.

WPC’S SUPPORT FOR DISPLACED FAMILIES

For many years, WPC has offered these sheltered families parties to celebrate holidays, especially Christmas, complete with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Our goal has been to give a bit of cheer and let these families know that they are not forgotten. In the past we have offered a “store” where parents pick out gifts for their children and parents were given $10 gift cards for Price Chopper or Walmart. Before COVID shut events down, WPC also offered a bi-monthly book give-away to the residents. These events have been funded by the annual pledges of WPC members and friends which support our mission budget as well as additional donations from individuals.

WINTER GIVE-AWAY EVENT - MONETARY AND VOLUNTEER DONATIONS NEEDED

We are not able to offer a Christmas party this year but our support continues. This year we are planning to give each family at Schuyler a $50 gift card, along with our winter give-away items, scarves, hats, gloves, mittens and socks.

Before coming to the Capital District in 1968, Nancy taught elementary school in Ohio. Once here, she continued teaching for a year in the Guilderland district. She became intricately involved in the natural foods movement in the late 60s and early 70s and was one of the founders of the Honest Weight Food Coop. In 1976 she joined the teaching staff at the Albany Free School in downtown Albany where she remained for 26 years. Since retiring from there, she has continued her love of teaching with a class or two at the Harriet Tubman Democratic High School in Albany. Nancy was a Giffen Team volunteer which has expanded into a one-on-one tutoring program called Wizards Wardrobe and she has been tutoring for several years. Nancy is now on the FOCUS Board and is involved with both the food pantry and the breakfast program as a long-time volunteer.
